Open Opportunities
Open PhD position LADAR laser-based object detection in maritime environment
O.M. Offshore Monitoring Ltd (OSM) is a fast growing, tech driven SME with worldwide ambitions. Inspired by the needs of the Maritime Industry, OSM was founded in 2007 by a Norwegian entrepreneur dedicated to combining his expertise in Remote Sensing with his passion for sailing on the open seas.
OSM has top class professionals and support staff located across Europe, Caribbean and Asia (e.g. Norway, Sweden, UK, Cyprus, Anguilla, Singapore). Our worldwide team is spread over a growing consortium of spin-off and expert SMEs, all working towards the same goal of improving the efficiency, sustainability, security and safety of commercial shipping and offshore activities.
Since 2007, OSM has designed, developed, tested and demonstrated several surveillance, safety and security concepts for operations related to off-shore and port activities as well as for commercial shipping. This involved the development and integration of new data processing algorithms, the adaptation, configuration and installation of sensor suites for maritime observations and the multi-level use of (satellite) earth observation data. More recently, OSM have developed a new approach to voyage optimisation for the shipping industry, based on improved weather predictions, satellite remote sensing, machine learning and the latest developments in naval architecture. The new system allows a great increase in energy efficiency of sailing, lowering fuel consumption and emissions, while at the same time increasing safety, security and longevity of the ships.
OSM is now looking for Phd student to assist us in our R&D project. The successful candidate will participate in our ongoing multi-year project and have an opportunity to do relevant scientific research within an industrial context and to collaborate with a broad group of international scientists, universities, business partners and shipping industry.
The current PhD position will focus on the use of a LADAR mounted on a ship or a land position scanning the surrounding area at short and long ranges to detect objects on, in or under the water surface.
The main task of the PhD assignment will be to implement an overall simulation and object detection model for the detection of submerged targets using LADAR. The work will involve building adequate system models for laser propagation in air and water, and to implement a working detector system that could be used on synthetic and real data. The challenge would be to understand the air/sea interface and to understand the corresponding limitations to submerged object detection. This work will be supported by real measurements using experimental LADARs from land and ship installations.
Prerequisites for the work is good working knowledge and qualifications in at least two of the following topics:
Optical remote sensing technology
Object detection methods
Signal and Image Processing methods
Wave propagation methods
Laser technology
